Originally developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the 1970’s, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based treatment, originally used for acute trauma. Since its inception, the treatment uses and protocols have expanded to include treatment of depression, anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, low self-worth, and many other issues. EMDR can be integrated with other types of therapeutic orientations and modalities, including Christian counseling, IFS, and CBT.

Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a model developed by Richard Schwartz that views each person as having an internal system that needs to be understood, validated, and led my the self to be healthy. This model has been shown to be effective with a variety of problems including complex trauma, addictions, and family of origin issues. This model is compatible with other orientations, such as Christian counseling and EMDR.

Christian counseling is a type of therapy that can integrate typical secular counseling methods, such as talk therapy, EMDR, activity therapy, etc., with the Christian theology. This type of counseling is done only by request from the client. The extent of theology, prayer, or other Christian elements is led by the client.

Teens and pre-teens sometimes need tweaks to the typical talk therapy format in order to make therapy more effective. These adjustments in session may include the addition of expressive arts, sand tray work, games/activities, or use of movement and fidgets during session. Clients ages 12-17 will be informed of limited confidentiality. The counselor will also regularly meet with parents to ensure alignment of goals and strategies within the home. *Please note: Play therapy and therapy work with clients below 12 years old is not offered at this time.

Traditional talk therapy is attentive, reflective listening with non-judgmental observations on the client’s feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. These observations can be empowering for people to gain insight to unhelpful patterns and be empowered to make changes. Talk therapy is the foundation for building rapport and is often the primary modality of therapeutic interaction. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on identifying and correcting thought distortions that impact behaviors and emotions.
